SGL develops cost-effective route to partial file restore for Sony XDCAM

SGL IBC Press Release

Amsterdam, IBC, Stand 8.B28c – 11th September 2009 – Software Generation Ltd (SGL), a leading provider of content archive and storage management software for media and entertainment, has developed a new and cost-effective route to partial file restore (PFR) for Sony’s globally utilised XDCAM format.

Tackling the fact that XDCAM is inherently designed as an acquisition file format and therefore doesn’t lend itself to long-term linear archive solutions like LTO tape, SGL’s archive and content management system FlashNet 6.2 can now provide partial file restore directly from archived XDCAM files stored on linear data tape. This announcement further highlights SGL’s strong commitment to providing the optimum archive solutions for the broadcast community.

FlashNet 6.2 overcomes the challenges presented by XDCAM and the way it utilises important technical metadata. Consequently XDCam lends itself better to random access storage media (like the XDCAM disks used in the field). This is a feature exploited by some systems in order to get to the partial segment required from the archive.

Now FlashNet 6.2 can accomplish partial file restore from XDCAM material when extracting a segment from the archive, resulting in a much faster retrieval process. As well as removing the need for additional temporary disk storage this new process also removes the need for additional transcoding, therefore increasing the overall cost-effectiveness and ease-of-use of the FlashNet solution.

Bernie Walsh, SGL’s Worldwide Sales & Joint Managing Director comments, “SGL is committed to providing solutions that improve workflows and save money. FlashNet’s support for XDCam is another example of how SGL’s software solutions can help to improve the lives of broadcasters and post facilities. We are delighted to make this announcement at IBC today.”
